Tradespeople are reminded of asbestos risks

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that every tradesperson is likely to undertake work in a building that contains asbestos at some point. Those carrying out repairs or refurbishment work are at a higher risk of disturbing asbestos, especially when working in houses built before the year 2000.

5000 people a year die from past exposure to asbestos.  Asbestos continues to be the largest cause of occupational cancer deaths, with risks from silica dust coming in second place.

The actions the tradesperson or employer could take to help keep themselves safe from the risks associated with disturbed asbestos include:

  • checking if the building was built or refurbished before the year 2000;
  • ensuring both the employer and/or tradesperson understand the current building asbestos register and it covers where work is planned;
  • planning the job, if possible, to avoid disturbing asbestos;
  • checking if a survey has been done to find the location and condition of any asbestos where work is carried out. This should include asbestos hidden within the building fabric. However be aware that hidden asbestos could still be found even if a survey has been done.

Some materials are high risk and it is illegal to work on these unless you hold an asbestos licence.

If asbestos is discovered, stop work immediately and follow the guidance on what to do if you discover or accidentally disturb asbestos: www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/em1.pdf.Asbestos
